Your next project is to edit an action scene.
Your next assignment is a short film in which you show a person or object taking a journey- going from one place to his/her/its destination. Along the way there should be obstacles/ conflict. This film should have no dialogue, although it may have narration. The point is to let the shots and the action tell the story.
The way to start this is to create a story. Where is your subject going and what does he/she/it want? What is standing in their way? How do they overcome the obstacle(s)? How does the story end? Once you have a good story, draw a storyboard so that you plan for each of the shots by drawing them in the order they will be presented. Ask me for storyboard sheets. Watch this storyboarding video for drawing tips. THIS WILL BE ASSIGNMENT #1- STORYBOARD This will be shot with your phone camera. If you don't have a camera, you can check one out from me. Remember: ALL SHOTS IN HORIZONTAL FORMAT. The film must have an instrumental soundtrack (no copyrighted music). Sound may include sound effects or asynchronous dialogue. This film should contain at least 15 of the the following 20 shots:
Editing can only happen in class. No outside editing. Shooting may occur outside school or at school, but class time will not be used for shooting. Therefore, it would be wise to plan your shoot over the 4-day weekend. You may use classmates, friends and family as your actors. FIRST EDIT WILL BE ASSIGNMENT #2- ROUGH CUT Watch this film on The Cinematographer.
Take the Cinematographer quiz in Edmodo. Make sure you and your table partner agree on all answers before you make your final submission. When you finish this assignment you will have identified most of the essential camera shots.
1. Watch and familiarize yourself with Essential Camera Shots . Take notes. 2. Watch Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. (This is part 1 of 5. You will want to watch them in order.) 3. Find an example of each shot in the Occurence at Owl Creek video. Take a screen shot, being careful to get the full screen (CMD-Shift-4 to select you own, CMD-Shift-3 to take the entire screen.) 4. Open that screen shot in Illustrator. 5. Use text to identify the shot size and type and arrows to show the camera movement. Make sure that the text is bright yellow (shows up best) with a drop shadow behind it (to make it stand out). 6. Export the labeled shot as a .png. File>Export>Export as>.png. Name it the same as the label. 7. When you have finished, upload the 20 separate shots in ONE email (20 separate attachments). (do not use a zip file or folder). There should be an example of each angle, shot size and movement listed in Essential Camera Shots (except for a crane). Alternate method: follow the instructions above but create all 20 shots as 20 artboards in one .ai (Adobe Illustrated) file. Choose File>Export>Export as>png. Send the .png to [email protected] Here's a list of all the shots needed:
8. Title the file #bothnames.shots and send to [email protected] You are going to create a storyboard that shows each of the 5 basic shots. Review the 5 basic shots in this link: 5 Basic Shots
The best way to learn it is to teach.
